More than a thousand journalists from all over the world have signed the “Addis Ababa Declaration” which recalls articles 19 and 21 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights as well as the responsibilities of Unesco member countries, journalists, electoral committees, the member countries of the United Nations, for monitoring and combating the phenomenon of disinformation and fake news and creating new tools to encourage information as a fundamental right of people.
The declaration for the recognition of cartooning (satirical vignettes) as a fundamental right of human beings was also presented by Xavier Gorce, historical cartoonist of Le Monde. The cartooning declaration was handed over to Unesco high officials.
The World press freedom prize “Guillermo Cano” was presented to the family members of Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, who were both sentenced to 7 years in prison in Myanmar for documenting summary executions carried out by soldiers on the population.
Three dense days in which dozens of seminars and workshops were held in the United Nations headquarters in Addis Ababa and in the African Union, where the theme “Journalism and elections in the era of disinformation” was explored.
Director of the Forum of Mediterranean women journalists Marilù Mastrogiovanni, a member of the jury who awarded the “Guillermo Cano” prize, participated in the work at the invitation of Unesco and presented the mission of the Forum to colleagues coming from the various continents.
