Women’s right to be named in female roles is linked to their right to self-determination. The new code of ethics for journalists introduces Article 13, which also relates to the correct reporting of victims of femicide. The issue of giving one’s surname to one’s children remains controversial in many legal and cultural contexts, even though it is a fundamental issue of equality, identity and recognition. The panel ‘In the name of the mother’ aims to explore how surname attribution practices, the incorrect use of gendered language by journalists and the double victimisation in the reporting of femicide reflect and perpetuate power relations within families and societies, and how reforming them could be an important step towards dismantling patriarchal structures.
