ceyda-karan-journalist-Turkish
There is growing fear for Ceyda Karan after the arrest last Oct. 31 of its editor Murat Sabuncu and 12 other colleagues from the progressive secular daily “Cumhuriyet” (Turkish for “Republic”).

The journalist is expected in Italy next Nov. 23/24 for the Forum of Mediterranean Women Journalists, but the flurry of arrests by Turkish police makes her position very critical.
Indeed, weighing on Karan is a two-year sentence in first instance last April for “insulting religious values” and “inciting hatred” for publishing Charlie Hebdo cartoons in Cumhuriyet following the attack on the French satirical magazine. After the Istanbul court ruling, the journalist did not lose her combativeness and wrote on Twitter that her conviction “is a gift to our liberal fascists”; a clear reference to Erdogan. Also ready is the reaction of the Italian journalists’ union http://www.articolo21.org/2016/04/two-years-of-prison-a- ceyda-karan-lorussian-attack- to-journalists-turks-and-an-emergency-to-be-addressed/.
Meanwhile, the Turkish president further tightens the noose of repression by having Ceyda Karan’s colleagues arrested in the spectacular bliz two days ago and gagging the oldest and most influential opposition newspaper in Turkey. The Islamist government thus shows its fierce face to the world.
We eagerly await our colleague Ceyda Karan in Bari and Lecce to hear from her voice the story about the democratic involution of the Turkish republic.
