The Forum of Mediterranean Wowen Journalists again this year will have two stages: the first in Rome, Nov. 9-12, and the second in Bari, Nov. 21-25. Impressive programming: 60 hours of training, 9 days, 80 peace builders, journalists, activists, academics from Euro-Mediterranean countries and Afghanistan, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, Sahel, Burma, Tigray, Colombia.
Also double the thread: “Women, Peace, Security” and “Infowar.” Unchanged is the Forum’s mission: “To build bridges and break down walls by promoting reflection on the work of investigative journalists as a garrison of Democracy and peace.”
In this edition, the focus will be on “Bodies, ecosystems, communities: dismembered by conflicts, stitched back together by women,” shining a spotlight on the peace-building practices enacted by women, on territories devastated by wars.
The Forum is funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and, for the Bari section, by Corecom Puglia.
It is organized by Pangea Foundation and the Association of Women Journalists of the Mediterranean, in collaboration with the journalists’ cooperative IdeaDinamica, and Giulia Giornaliste. The University of Bari (with the Department of Education, Psychology, Communication, Master’s in Journalism and Balab, Center for Innovation and Creativity), which has shared the project’s value thrust since the first edition, is hosting the second session, incorporating it into the doctoral training program in “Science of Human Relations” and recognizing university credits for students.

Le partecipanti si sono divise in tre gruppi, secondo il proprio Paese/Regione per discutere della situazione degli attuali conflitti che lo/la affliggono. Alle partecipanti provenienti dall'estero si sono unite donne della diaspora di tali Paesi/Regioni che vivono in Italia e sono impegnate per l'avanzamento dei diritti delle donne e la pace nei propri Paesi d'origine. Le donne sono i bersagli preferiti dagli haters on line. Un linguaggio denso di stereotipi e discriminazioni alimenta il fenomeno dell’hate speech.
Tutelare la pluralità e l’indipendenza dei media è uno degli obiettivi prioritari della Ue. Il Media Freedom act intende introdurre misure di protezione per incrementare la libertà delle giornaliste e dei giornalisti, garantendone la sicurezza.
Il Metaverso è un nuovo ecosistema massmediale, con il quale l’informazione dovrà confrontarsi nel futuro prossimo. Come saranno costruite le notizie, con quali strumenti e con quali paletti deontologici? Come sarà garantito l’accesso all’informazione e come cambierà il concetto di privacy, dal momento che cambierà il concetto di “corpo”, sostituito dagli avatar?

In questo panel scopriamo quali minacce sono piu comuni nel mondo digitale e come fare a difendersi in quanto reporter. Vedremo alcune accortezze da seguire ma anche alcuni strumenti che ci possono aiutare nel contrasto agli attacchi cyber.
The panel "Unarmed. Disarming. Nonviolent women in struggle" aims to give voice to journalists who, with the tools of speech, creativity and knowledge, oppose the armed and symbolic violence that seems to overwhelm the contemporary world. "Unarmed" because they have no weapons, but "disarming" in their ability to dismantle authoritarian and patriarchal systems through independent journalism and critical research. Journalists denounce conflicts and abuses using language that respects human rights, documenting the mechanisms of discrimination and offering data and interpretative keys. The Forum will thus explore non-violence as a political and cognitive gesture, capable of creating communities and opening up spaces for social, environmental and gender justice, while denouncing the many phenomena of systemic violence that journalists have to endure in a global information landscape where freedom of the press and expression is severely compromised.

At the heart of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, press freedom is under siege. 275 local reporters have lost their lives covering the war, often amid international indifference. The panel addresses the systematic violation of the right to information, the role of global media and the risks faced by those who bear witness on the ground. The aim is to denounce censorship, give a voice to those who resist and propose tools to protect journalists.

The women's movement in Kurdistan, particularly in Western Kurdistan, Rojava, is at the forefront of feminism, seeking to reform every aspect of civil life through a transformative pedagogy of society.
Yet the scope of this revolution, based on the peaceful coexistence of peoples and cultures starting with the abolition of patriarchy, is ignored and censored by the mainstream media, and the conditions of a people oppressed by apartheid implemented by four nation states are removed from the collective consciousness. The experiment in radical democracy, which has been going on for over ten years, is in danger of being destroyed, under attack, including with chemical weapons, especially from Turkey. Yet the PKK, the Kurdish workers' party, has chosen to disarm in a solemn ceremony in which weapons were burned.
Information therefore becomes crucial in giving voice to revolutionary and peaceful experiences in a high-risk area. Female journalists in north-eastern Syria are fighting a battle for truth from a gender perspective.

The link between language, visibility and female citizenship must be addressed. If women are not mentioned, represented or recognised in the media, they end up being invisible in the public sphere. The new Code of Ethics for Journalists sets out the criteria for the correct reporting of femicides. Words and images contribute to reinforcing sexist stereotypes or, conversely, to dismantling them, breaking the chain of violence. The results of the 30th year of the Global Media Monitoring Project (in which the University of Bari participated for the first time) will be presented, along with the results of Ossigeno per l'Informazione's monitoring of gender-based threats to journalists and Sui generis, a review by Giulia Giornaliste that monitors the presence of female signatures on the front pages of Italian newspapers.

Women's right to be named in female roles is linked to their right to self-determination. The new code of ethics for journalists introduces Article 13, which also relates to the correct reporting of victims of femicide. The issue of giving one's surname to one's children remains controversial in many legal and cultural contexts, even though it is a fundamental issue of equality, identity and recognition. The panel 'In the name of the mother' aims to explore how surname attribution practices, the incorrect use of gendered language by journalists and the double victimisation in the reporting of femicide reflect and perpetuate power relations within families and societies, and how reforming them could be an important step towards dismantling patriarchal structures.

UN Security Council Resolution 1325 establishes the fundamental role of women in peace processes and conflict prevention. The panel analyses real experiences of women's participation in mediation, the protection of women's rights in war zones and the challenges that remain in translating international law into concrete policies. The aim is to share best practices, inspire new strategies and promote transnational networks of female leadership in peace and security. To do this, it is necessary to train journalists in feminist practices and theories, gender language, and the rights of migrants and vulnerable people.

Il panel “Disarmate. Disarmanti. Donne nonviolente in lotta” intende dare voce alle giornaliste che, con strumenti di parola, creatività e conoscenza, si oppongono alla violenza armata e simbolica che sembra travolgere il mondo contemporaneo. “Disarmate” perché prive di armi, ma “disarmanti” nella capacità di scardinare i sistemi autoritari e patriarcali, attraverso il giornalismo indipendente e la ricerca critica. Le giornaliste denunciano conflitti e soprusi con linguaggi rispettosi dei diritti umani, documentando i meccanismi della discriminazione, offrendo dati e chiavi interpretative. Il Forum esplorerà così la nonviolenza come gesto politico e conoscitivo, capace di creare comunità e di aprire spazi di giustizia sociale, ambientale e di genere, denunciando al contempo i tanti fenomeni di violenza sistemica che le giornaliste devono subire, all’interno di un panorama informativo mondiale dove la libertà di stampa ed espressione è fortemente compromessa.

L’obiettivo è condividere strumenti concreti di resistenza e pratiche di giornalismo etico. Il movimento delle donne in Kurdistan, in particolare nel Kurdistan occidentale, il Rojava, è l’avanguardia del femminismo, che vuole riformare ogni aspetto del vivere civile a partire da una pedagogia trasformativa della società. Eppure la portata di questa rivoluzione, basata sulla convivenza pacifica di popoli e culture a partire dall’abolizione del patriarcato, viene sottaciuta e censurata dai media mainstream e le condizioni di un popolo oppresso dall’apartheid messo in atto da quattro Stati-nazione sono rimosse dalla coscienza collettiva. L’esperimento di democrazia radicale portato avanti da oltre dieci anni rischia di essere annientato, sotto gli attacchi, anche con armi chimiche, soprattutto della Turchia. Eppure il PKK, partito dei lavoratori curdi, ha scelto di disarmarsi, in una cerimonia solenne in cui sono state bruciate le armi. L’informazione diventa quindi cruciale per dare voce ad esperienze rivoluzionare e pacifiche in un territorio ad alto rischio. Le giornaliste del nord-est della Siria portano avanti una battaglia di verità in chiave di genere.

Il legame tra linguaggio, visibilità e cittadinanza femminile deve essere problematizzato. Se le donne non vengono nominate, rappresentate o riconosciute nei media, finiscono per essere invisibili nello spazio pubblico. Il nuovo Codice deontologico delle giornaliste e dei giornalisti fissa i criteri per una corretta narrazione anche dei femminicidi. Parole e immagini contribuiscono a rafforzare stereotipi sessisti o, al contrario, a scardinarli, interrompendo la catena della violenza. Si presenteranno i risultati del 30° anno del Global media monitoring project (a cui per la prima volta ha partecipata l’Università di Bari) del monitoraggio di Ossigeno per l’Informazione sulle minacce di genere alle giornaliste e di Sui generis, rassegna di Giulia giornaliste che monitora la presenza delle firme femminili sulle prime pagine dei giornali italiani.

Il diritto delle donne di essere nominate con ruoli declinati al femminile attiene al loro diritto di autodeterminazione. Il nuovo codice deontologico delle giornaliste e dei giornalisti introduce l’articolo 13, anche in relazione alla corretta narrazione delle vittime di femminicidio. Anche la questione del dare il proprio cognome ai figli resta ancora oggi una questione controversa in molti contesti giuridici e culturali, pur rappresentando un tema fondamentale di uguaglianza, identità e riconoscimento. Il panel “Nel nome della madre” intende esplorare come le pratiche di attribuzione del cognome, il non corretto utilizzo del linguaggio di genere da parte dei giornalisti e la doppia vittimizzazione nel racconto dei femminicidi riflettano e perpetuino i rapporti di potere all’interno delle famiglie e delle società, e come una loro riforma possa costituire un passo importante verso lo smantellamento delle strutture patriarcali.
