Ahead of the 13 December congress in Barcelona, the Italian-Spanish-Portuguese consortium ‘XQ the News’ launches a ‘call for proposals’ aimed at students and teachers
The consortium ‘XQ EUJOY: European Youth Journalism. The Why of the News’, made up of the Spanish publishing companies Octaedro and Fundació Periodisme Plural, the Portuguese ASPEA and the Italian Dataninja and IdeaDinamica, aims to strengthen the role of journalism as an educational tool and wants to contribute to the development of a more critical and informed citizenship.
For this reason, on the occasion of the international congress ‘Journalism and Education: the Why of News in the Age of Disinformation’ to be held on 13 December in Barcelona, Spain, it invites Italian students and teachers to submit essays on the great topic of journalism.
In particular, proposals should reflect on how the world of information is trying to adapt to changes in society without losing its essence as a guarantor of democratic rights and its educational potential.
The call for proposals is open to students, teachers, communication professionals, journalists and journalists. Proposals should critically reflect on topics such as the impact of new technologies, the spread of disinformation, the need for more inclusive and decolonial narratives, the educational potential of journalism and journalistic ethics in the third millennium.
Proposals must be submitted in English, with an abstract of 300-500 words, by 31 October 2024. Selected speakers will be invited to present their work at the congress in Barcelona and may publish their contributions in the journal XQ The News.
Important dates to remember: submission deadline 31 October and notification of acceptance 8 November. For more information and submission details, visit the congress registration form or contact info@xqthenews.com.
The Barcelona Congress
The international congress ‘Journalism and Education: why news in the age of disinformation’ will take place on 13 December 2024 at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, within the Poblenou Communication Campus.
The aim is to explore the role of journalism as an educational tool and its importance in promoting informed and critical citizenship. Issues such as the impact of disinformation, journalistic ethics and the integration of decolonial perspectives in the media to meet the challenges of the digital age will be addressed.
The congress aims to promote critical reflection on journalism as an essential democratic right, capable of expanding rights, promoting transparency and stimulating critical thinking. However, this role is threatened by changes in the media, where immediacy and virality often prevail over the quality and truthfulness of information. The congress will address these challenges by analysing how journalism can recover its formative role in a context of increasing disinformation. Another central theme will be the integration of intersectional approaches in journalism, to overcome narratives that exclude marginalised voices. The collaboration between journalism and education will also be discussed, exploring how media can form critical citizens in an era dominated by algorithms and digital platforms.
An event therefore that reaffirms the XQ the News Consortium’s commitment to ethical, democratic and responsible journalism, capable of tackling the challenges of disinformation and inequality.
